simon faithfull roams the water-bound ruins of a futuristic beach house in florida

simon faithfull’s work has been described as an attempt to understand and explore the planet as a sculptural object. the english artist, often working with teams of scientists, technicians and transmission experts, tests the earth’s limits and reports back from its extremities — a personal vision from the ends of the world. in a new film work presented at the exchange in cornwall, faithfull explores the water-bound ruins of a futuristic beach house off the coast of florida. the now-abandoned dwelling, comprising four dome-shaped modules on stilts, was initially intended to sit on land. following two hurricanes, shoreline erosion has stranded the architectural jewel partially submerged about 50 meters from the coast.

faithfull’s film ‘re-enactment for a future scenario no.2: cape romano’ highlights the continuing shifting of boundaries, as the artist traverses the domed, semi-underwater rooftops and studies the remnants of a recent architectural ruin. the film is presented as part of the exhibition ‘fathom’ at the exchange from june 15 – october 5, 2019. the artist has also curated an international group exhibition that imagines future landscapes titled ‘europe after the rain’ at its partner venue, newlyn art galley.
