ethnographic collection in SONSdirk vanderschueren, owner of the belgian shoemanufacturer cortina group together with dutchman william (boy) habraken and antwerp shoemaker couple veerle swenters and pierre bogaerts created SONS- shoes or no shoes museum in kruishoutem, belgium. the museum houses the biggest ethnographic shoe collection in the world next a modern art- and a designers collection.vanderschueren commented ‘the idea is that the entire project should be seen as an adventure. by allowing the three shoe collections to confront each other, we are convinced that you will become involved and that you will have a sensational experience. you can go on your discovery and turn your visit into a wonderful adventure…‘the building, originally built in 1973 by emile veranneman and architect christiaan vander plaetse, maintained the original structure. young belgian architect lode uytterschaut tried ompletely covered it with lead to fortify the architectural volume into a massive and monumental unity.
