urban artist SpY illuminates the streets of madrid with a new piece entitled LUNA — or MOON — in celebration of the moon landing’s 50th anniversary. simple and distinct, the luminous project comprises the figural expression of a first-quarter moon suspended high above street level from a construction crane servicing the fifth tower of the the caleido complex in the northern end of the city. the dates of the intervention coincided with july 20th 1969, when man first set foot on the moon — an historic moment for mankind.

in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of this milestone in space exploration, LUNA by urban artist SpY serves as a glowing reminder of the landmark moment. the project presents a floating intervention emulating a crescent moon suspended in space. given the size of the buildings and supporting cranes, the artist was challenged to generate a moon large enough to stand out against the four towers and which could be seen from different parts of the city. viewers were able to see the piece, measuring nine meters in length, on the evening of july 20th, coinciding with the anniversary of man’s landing on the moon.
