the daughters and sons knot is a massive street installation by artist steed taylor lining vermont avenue in washington DC. the project is a complex celtic knot painted onto the road itself. the design was installed to honour soldiers recently killed while serving in the armed forces. the knot pattern is 60 feet wide and 300 feet long, so large in fact that it is viewable from google maps satellite view. the names of each soldier’s children is placed in the design during the painting process and later covered after a dedication ceremony. the site on vermont avenue was selected because of its historical significance in the city, which included brief stint as a soldier encampment during the war of 1812.
