Dwelling: home as a shifting system of memory, routine, and use

Dwelling is a self-initiated research and exhibition project developed by the Faculty of Architecture and Design at STU in Bratislava. The work investigates how memory, everyday routines, and human presence continuously shape residential interiors. Through immersive spatial installations, projections, sound, and archival materials, the exhibition reveals housing as a dynamic and evolving environment.

The project approaches the home as an ongoing process rather than a fixed design object. It considers how routines, habits, personal adaptations, and accumulated traces of use continuously shape domestic environments over time. The exhibition is structured around four modular spatial units that reveal fragmented readings of a home interior. Instead of reconstructing complete rooms, the installation presents abstract spatial conditions and selected domestic objects that indicate human presence.

projected images and sound form a layered reading of home

Visitors move through a sequence of environments where projections, sound, archival photographs, and spatial interventions form a layered spatial narrative. Through projection mapping, the design team introduces visual content derived from archival sources, collages, housing-related datasets, and architectural drawings. A corresponding sound environment, generated from housing statistics and domestic recordings, extends the spatial reading of the installation and translates research material into an auditory layer.

By combining exhibition design, spatial storytelling, and qualitative design research, Dwelling proposes an alternative perspective on the residential interior. It suggests that the meaning of a dwelling is not defined solely by architecture or furniture, but emerges through continuous interaction between space, time, and human presence.
