takahiro komuro's life-sized sculptures are toy-like monsters of religion

tokyo-based artist takahiro komuro has launched a new exhibition in japan revealing new editions of his surreal, monster-like sculptures. featuring dragons, two-headed dolls and other beastly characters, fifteen of komuro’s life-size wooden subjects are on show in the atrium of the ginza tsutsaya books store in chuo city.

titled ‘vortex,’ the aim of komuro’s latest exhibition is to subvert religious iconography by introducing figures that present themselves as alternative relics for worship. at its center, a 2.5 meter ‘magic dragon’ is the holy shrine to a series of imaginative sculptures covered in various religious symbols including hexagrams, triangles, and crescent moons.

komuro mixes these these religious icons with contemporary labels usually found on products such as ‘made in japan’ and ‘ages 4 and up’. as a result, komuro’s figures are at once monstrous and yet still child-like. using basic and bright colors, they appear as nightmare creatures and at the same time as animated toys.

‘vortex’ is on show at the ginza tsutsaya books until august 25th. on occasion of the exhibition, komuro is also selling soft vinyl sculptures and one-off miniature pieces that are limited to the main store. to view more of komuro’s mind-bending sculptures you can follow him on instagram or check out his website.
