happy new year! here's to another year of teamlab's exciting projects

located in the hotel reception of mifuneyama rakuen in kyushu, japan, teamlab adds ‘winter’ colors to its ‘forest and spiral of resonating lamps in the forest – one stroke, snow and winter camellia’ exhibition. with kasane no irome colors which translates to nuances of layered tones, the traditional practice involves creating seasonal colors in silk. the material was so thin that more nuances were created with overlapping gradations, complex weaves and combinations of warp and weft. the three chosen colors – ice, layered ice and camellia – have been like-wised immersed into the installation via tonal variations, mirroring and overlaps.

teamlab’s immersive lighting installation inside the mifuneyama rakuen hotel reacts to guests and staff. as people get close to a lamp, it shines brightly and emits a color. this becomes the starting point for a wave of colored light that spreads to the two nearest lamps and then on to another after another continuously. once all have illuminated, the light then fades and returns eventually the the original lamp. however, when a resonating light encounters the light originating from another person, the lamp at the meeting point glows a combination of all the intersecting colors.

seemingly arranged at random, all the lamps of the exhibition have a single connecting line. their placement is mathematically determined to a number of restrictions: to form an orderly grid, the boundaries of the physical space, and how the lamps must form a line. the result ensures the trajectory of the resonating light cannot be predicted.

the ‘forest and spiral of resonating lamps in the forest – one stroke, snow and winter camellia’ exhibition can only be viewed during the winter season from december 10, 2018 to february 14, 2019.
