teamlab’s permanent museum opens in japan
Spanning over 10,000 square meters, teamLab’s permanent art museum, Biovortex Kyoto, is set to open on October 7th, 2025, in Minami-ku, within walking distance of Kyoto Station. The project represents the collective’s largest exhibition in Japan and signals a new phase in their approach to immersive, multi-sensory environments (find designboom’s previous coverage here). Conceived as part of the Kyoto Station Southeast Area Project, Biovortex Kyoto positions itself at the intersection of urban development, culture, and interactive art.

Biovortex Kyoto features more than 50 immersive artworks
The collection of Biovortex Kyoto encompasses more than 50 artworks, many of which explore teamLab’s long-standing interest in perception, transience, and the interplay between humans and their environments. Among the highlights is Massless Amorphous Sculpture, a work never before shown in Japan, which illustrates the group’s concept of Environmental Phenomena, which is the idea that artworks emerge from the conditions that surround them. Other key pieces include Megaliths, Transient Abstract Life and Return, and Return, alongside a series of interactive spaces designed to bring together education and play, such as Athletics Forest and Future Park.
Athletics Forest invites visitors into a complex, high-dimensional space where physical movement and spatial awareness become tools for experiencing time and perception differently. The installation reflects the international art collective’s interest in how bodily interaction can generate thought and awareness beyond conventional dimensions. Meanwhile, Future Park embodies collaborative creativity through artworks that evolve as visitors co-create with one another, illustrating the fluidity of creative processes when shared collectively.

Interactive Creativity in the Heart of the City
The Biovortex Kyoto museum also features a suite of visually striking, digitally mediated works. These include Sea of Solidified Light, Spherical Crystallized Light, Ephemeral Crystallized Drop, and Forest of Flow and Light, each employing digital projection and responsive design to transform the surrounding environment. The integration of these works into a single, contiguous space encourages reflection on the interdependence of art, perception, and environment, central themes of teamLab’s practice. Additional interactive facilities, such as the Sketch Factory, allow visitors to turn their digital creations into tangible products.
Biovortex Kyoto is part of a city plan to make the area southeast of Kyoto Station a creative hub for culture, art, and youth-focused activities.
