In an ode to the workers driving climate solutions forward and shaping our future, Tiles of The Sun by The Switch, 72andSunny, and Harlinger reimagines traditional Dutch tiles as vibrant symbols of sustainability. The project celebrates the tireless efforts of technicians in advancing energy transition while addressing the pressing need for skilled individuals in combatting climate change, along the surfaces of tiles handcrafted and painted by artisans from the Haarlinger Tile factory using techniques originating from 1598. The imagery of a solar panel installer itself builds on and draws parallels to the rich traditions of the blacksmiths, skippers, tailors, and carpenters — craftsmen and women who built up the Netherlands.

The Switch’s ethos of sustainable entrepreneurship weaves through the project. Operating as both a training institute and an installation company, the group deploys green energy solutions like solar panels and car chargers while providing free training and employment opportunities for those with refugee backgrounds. To bring attention to this mission, The Switch partners with 72andSunny to create a culturally relevant symbol of pride: repurposing Dutch tiles in traditional ‘Delfts Blauw’ style into a celebration of the craftsmanship the country so desperately needs.

The bespoke tiles will be gifted to businesses and households that engage The Switch for the installation of solar panels, batteries, car chargers, and insulation. Additionally, the general public is invited to join this initiative by purchasing these commemorative tiles, with all proceeds directly funding training programs and certifications for new talent at The Switch. ‘These tiles are more than just decorative objects; they are badges of honor for those who contribute to our mission.
