the ’emergence’ installation by UAP is a brass entry canopy for the SIIC center – qingdao beer city located on the coastline of china’s yellow sea. the curved project emerges from the ground floor level and soars at over 14 meters above pedestrians, while honoring the vision of the development by reflecting the city’s growth.

associate designer andrew furmanski led shanghai based studio UAP in collaboration with SIIC on the design, fabrication, and installation of ‘emergence’. at the base it measures 0.6m x 1m and  expands to an 8m x 19m soffit as it grows taller, revealing dramatic arches and a generous architectural space. with over 850 brass panels, the canopy’s surface is perforated by internal lighting, creating the illusion of shimmering lights on the water’s surface at night.
