the museum of contemporary canadian art is currently hosting the first solo exhibition in toronto by montréal artist valérie blass. blass works in a diverse range of mediums including sculpture, video and what she calls ‘sculptural painting’. this show features a collection of sculptural works that “reference physical characteristics of the human body in ways that create friction between abjection and transformation”. her works often use everyday objects or in the case of the pieces in this show cement, porcelain, paint, fabric and other scavenged materials. the pieces can be said to ‘simultaneously evoke primitive states and futuristic possibilities’. valérie blass lives and works in montréal where she is represented by parisian laundry gallery.
