visit pain: shedding light on spain’s rising temperatures

As the temperatures across Spain continue to radically rise, studio Xuxa turns to Midjourney to create a poster campaign that playfully sheds light on the harsh impacts of climate change in the region. Using artificial intelligence, the Spanish-Brazilian design duo has revisited the iconic vintage-style ‘Visit Spain’ tourism posters from the 60s and 70s that are familiar to most travelers, adapting them to spotlight today’s terrible reality.

In the familiar illustrative style with vibrant hues, two-dimensional shapes, and vintage typography, the posters illustrate distressed visitors sweltering under the Spanish sun and a tongue-in-cheek title that reads ‘Visit Pain’. The sun ironically covers the ‘S’ in Spain, and warns aspiring tourists about the impending dangers of heatstroke and dehydration.

xuxa reinterprets iconic vintage travel posters

The AI-generated campaign ‘Visit Pain’ takes a playful yet thought-provoking approach to graphic design to highlight the ongoing consequences of climate crisis that are affecting the residents of Spain. Over the past few years, the country’s average temperature has risen by over 1.5 degrees, leading to issues such as drought and even deaths, as well as widespread health impacts such as dehydration and heat stroke across the country.

While the original illustrations of the iconic posters from the late 1900s illustrate happy tourists and locals enjoying the beauty of the country, design studio Xuxa has reinterpreted them to depict the harsh reality of the present day in contrast with the picturesque vacations of the past. Instead, the images illustrate distraught travelers suffering from the consequences of the heat to convey the urgency of the situation.
