ethereal illustrations of magical moths with illuminating wings serve as decorations for a newly-opened restaurant ‘piccalilli’ located in culver city, LA. created by vlad stankovic, the australia-based serbian designer was commissioned by local design and architecture studio preen inc, headed up by alexis readinger.

preen tapped the talents of stankovic who based the animations on anatomical illustrations of moths and other insects, combining a measure of accuracy with an enchanting style. each one has been created with a combination of watercolors, colored pencils and post-editing in photoshop. it was then printed using lenticular printing, a technique where the image gives an illusion of depth and movement when viewed from different angles.

‘my work mostly displays a variety of animals, cute characters and bizarre creatures,’ explains stankovic. ‘I enjoy using traditional media such as watercolors, colored pencils, gouache, etc as well as digital tools in order to create my work.’

inspired by science and nature on one hand, and fantasy and fairy tales on the other, his love of both derives from a childhood collecting insects and reading folk tales. his other work includes illustrations for a variety of books as well as uniquely designed album covers.
