The world is getting doodled by Mr. Doodle

British artist Sam Cox, or known as Mr. Doodle, takes us on his Doodleland in Kent, a 12-room mansion fully covered in illustrative depictions of figures and symbols. The artist has shrouded every single piece of his house inside and outside — from the ceilings and walls to the kitchenware — in his characteristic black and white cartoonish signature. It took him two full years to complete this stunning project, which, as he mentioned, it was a childhood dream. Cox purchased the $ 1.54 million estate in southeastern England in 2019 and, with the aid of his close friends and family, he transformed it into a flawlessly white canvas to put his very own stamp.

In the time-lapse video, he posted a few days ago, the house is cast with his hand-drawn doodles, attracting millions of views globally. The animation includes 1857 photographs, tenaciously shot between September 2020 and September 2022. For this ambitious project, the artist utilized 900 liters of white paint, 401 cans of black spray paint (for the outside), 286 bottles of black drawing paint (for the inside), and 2296 pen nibs. He only used four different-sized pens, which were refillable and the nibs were replaceable, as the artist shared with the media.

every single corner is filled with ‘happy creatures’

After Mr. Doodle’s video release, his instagram follower numbers exploded, now reaching 2.7 million. In the video, he starts covering the bedroom with his characteristic monochrome pattern. After filling up the room from ground to ceiling, he heads to the bathroom. While he moves in the space, the sink, toilet seat, tiles, and bathtub are all decked out one after the other. As he wanders through the mansion, the ‘happy creatures’ seem to chase him and fill every single corner. Bedsheets, cooking utilities, computer, and clothes are all doodled without any surfaces left blank. The whole house is real, and the doodles were all hand-drawn for the animation. As mentioned, he did not use computer-generated imagery or CGI.

‘I spent years planning the work, every part of the piece was carefully thought and rethought before final completion. I have hid the progress of the piece from everyone except a small few, so this will be the first time you would have seen any of it.’ Mr. Doodle comments.

The artist had a flair for painting doodles from a young age. The furniture and walls of his parent’s house were a perfect start for him to unfold his creativity. Later on, the British artist created his very own visual signature, the Doodle World, emerging as constantly reproducing characters and motifs.
