the austrian 6,211 ft /1,893 meter mountain’s peak ötscher is a popular destination all the year round and offers something to everybody. last thursday, marika roth, a gaming-based alpinist, spotted a 2 meter timber phallus sculpture and documented it on her facebook account

a marketing gag?
an unknown artist has secretly (?) installed the giant and heavy male attribute overnight, meanwhile being exposed to weather and wind? rumor has it that the land art piece is evoking an archaic ‘fertility cult’ (the earliest example of a prehistoric phallic artifact was discovered in the ‘hohle fels’ / hollow rock, a cave in the swabian jura of germany).

meanwhile locals investigate who might be the creator, reportedly, the phallus will remain for a while. the installation has created such a social media buzz that the mountain’s lifts marketing manager ines enöckl thinks it could draw even more tourists to the north-east end of the alps
