woodino unveils a series of beautifully handcrafted dinosaur sculptures

when german designer tobias neukamm was wondering what present he could give to his nephew, he immediately thought about dinosaurs. but rather than a plastic figurine, which may offer a higher level of detail, neukamm decided to carefully handcraft a wooden tyrannosaurus rex sculpture. from this original idea, ‘woodino’ was conceived as a brand for handcrafted wooden dinosaur models.

to make the series, the german-based designer set out to research the different species of dinosaurs so he could craft the sculptures with great precision. from the triceratops to the stegosaurus, each model is based on the latest paleontological findings and reconstructions. and in addition to the wooden figurine itself, an info card is also included to illustrate the real-life scale of the mighty animals.

for the sculptures themselves, various types of wooden boards are used – from maple, birch and chestnut, depending on the size and thickness of the board or model. using simple woodcrafting tools, the dinosaurs are created in fine detail while carefully sanding the surface gives them a smooth touch and sleek appearance. the wooden material has been chosen by neukamm for its tactile quality, therefore no coating like dye, varnish or oil is used to retain the beautiful natural look and feel of the timber.
