while most art galleries are permanent fixtures, X is a new not-for-profit organization that will exist for only one year and present exhibitions in four phases. located in new york city, X opened on march 7th, as a way to challenge the traditional notions of experiencing and creating contemporary art. in each of X’s four phases programming will include durational artist interventions, site-specific projects, historical in-depth exhibitions, one-night performances, lectures and weekly events. because of X’s temporary nature, they are able to respond quickly to major philosophical and economic shifts impacting culture and contemporary art. the project is free to the public and its opening lineup includes an installation by mika tajima titled ‘the extras’, a survey of work by british filmmaker derek jarman and the rooftop installation ‘light chamber (part 2)’ by christian holstad. in addition a site-specific light installation by dan flavin will be located in the building’s stairwell for the duration of x. the building façade will also feature a site-specific work during each exhibition phase, marking the transition into a new kind of art center.
