the yayoi kusama museum, accompanied with an inaugural exhibition of over 600 pieces of the artist’s work, has recently opened in tokyo, japan. the museum is the first institution entirely dedicated to kusama — one of the world’s most important and influential contemporary artists. designboom was in tokyo for the press preview of the museum’s grand opening.

founded by yayoi kusama and her foundation, the museum presents, promotes and preserves kusama’s art. the dedicated building gives visitors a chance to learn about kusama and her path towards becoming one of the most well-known avant-garde artists of the century.

the inaugural exhibition features works from the monochrome drawing series ‘love forever’ as well as from the colorful canvas series ‘my eternal soul’. a new mirror room, ‘pumpkins screaming about love beyond infinity’, has been unveiled at the opening of the museum, accompanied by a new sculpture, ‘starry pumpkin’, on the building’s rooftop.

acting as an educational and inspiring space for broad and diverse audiences, the museum furthermore hosts biannual exhibitions of kusama’s art as well as associated lectures and events.
