british-nigerian artist yinka shonibare, MBE presents ‘dreaming rich’, his first solo show in hong kong at pearl lam galleries. through his determined artistic exploration of cultural themes like identity, colonialism and post-colonialism, shonibare immerses visitors to the exhibition in a sculptural party, featuring well-dressed, vibrantly patterned abstract figures drinking throughout the space. three ‘champagne kid’ sculptures with globe-shaped heads swing from chairs attached to the gallery walls, do handstands, and climb on furniture — all while holding cristal champagne bottles. the immaculately clothed, drunken mannequin youths are the creative incarnation of the corruption, excess and debauchery that have, in part, lead to the current economic crisis. the work is a colorful critique of the tainted luxury and greed that has led the world into a critical state.
