from march 4 to april 17, 2021, galerie perrotin new york presents a series of new, large-scale works by los angeles-based artist zach harris. known for his hand-carved panel paintings, harris blends architectural elements with painting and sculpture to create psychedelic pieces that immerse viewers in the depths of mysterious cosmologies. from afar, his works resemble religious reliefs, but upon closer inspection complex utopian and dystopian worlds unfold.zach harris ‘eclipse eye’, 2018. carved wood, water-based paint, ink. 99.1 x 91.4 cm | 39 x 36 in.

zach harris has created ten new pieces for his upcoming show at the first floor gallery space of perrotin new york. each work is hand carved and meticulously embellished with colorful scenes, elaborated with intricate laser cut forms and hand drawn miniatures. harris’s aesthetic is influenced by early american modernism, landscape painting, outsider art, and west coast eccentricity. at the same time, his craftsmanship and ornamentation allude to persian miniatures, islamic ornamentation, mandalas, and christian altarpieces.‘eclipse eye’ (detail), 2018

in his practice, harris draws from various pictorial traditions, mathematical precision, and complex color harmonies. for the artist, a good painting is defined as one that can ‘resolve itself into infinity,’ into a ‘cosmic stream’ where ‘within a single small shape one can detect worlds within worlds — where logic fields resolve and contrast endlessly with one another.’ born in 1976 in santa rosa, california, harris lives and works in los angeles. his work has been included in exhibitions at multiple institutions including the jewish museum, new york; santa barbara museum of art, california; and hammer museum, los angeles.zach harris ‘zodiac scroll’, 2018. carved wood, water-based paint, ink. 88.9 x 119.4 cm | 35 x 47 in.
