forming the centerpiece of sotheby’s exhibition, ‘lilas’ by zaha hadid is a sculptural open air pavilion with calligraphic arcs rising five and a half meters into the air. as with many of the late architect’s designs, the work fuses technology and organic form, referencing complex natural geometries, such as flower petals and leaves. the structure is able to accommodate interaction and movement; offering shade and shelter during the day, and becoming a source of illumination by night.

for each of our annual beyond limits shows we seek to bring something new and thrilling to the experience, and the resurrection of zaha hadid’s seminal lilas pavilion in such a historic location is one of the highlights this year,’ says simon stock, sotheby’s senior international specialist and curator of the exhibition. ‘the public display of the remarkable structure, which has traveled from a royal park to a stately garden, is also a fitting tribute to such a pioneer in her field. hadid’s pavilion is offset by the stunning grounds of chatsworth, along with works by renowned classic sculptors such as a masterpiece by aristide maillol, together with newer international names.’

‘beyond limits’ remains on display at chatsworth house from september 10th to october 30th, 2016.
