international design competition for cycling bridge in lisbon

experimentadesign and fundação galp energia have teamed up for an international design competition for a cycling bridge in lisbon.

fundação galp energia is a private nonprofit organization that has been created by portugal’s leading integrated oil and natural gas group, galp energia who is committed to social integration and development in local communities, assuming the social responsibility initiatives which cover the areas of the environment, culture, education and science. experimentadesign is synonymous with design, architecture and creativity in portugal, developing relationships with companies, organizations and creative practitioners with whom it shares similar views and a belief in the benefits of collaboration with. because of their shared vision of building a legacy of sustainability in the city of lisbon and portugal, the two are collaborating on this landmark project for the city. the bridge will facilitate access over a main motorway for cyclists and pedestrians, encouraging the use of bicycles in the city.

the competition is open to all architects and architecture firms. the winner will be awarded 10,000€ and potentially a contract to design the bridge. the deadline for submissions is september 7th, 2009 and winners will be announced during the opening week of EXD’09 lisboa. construction will commence in 2010.
