Can contemporary design hack deeply rooted artisanal traditions, transforming them into an experimental and innovative language?
The Master’s Degree in Interior Design, Hacking Tradition: Reinventing Craftsmanship and Materials hacks traditional knowledge while exploring new applications of materials and natural resources, fostering an ongoing exchange between innovation and heritage. It is based on a grounded dialogue with local territories and their traditions, anableing to create spaces and objects to become a conscious response to contextual needs.
The programme combines solid design methodologies with direct engagement in Tuscany’s renowned manufacturing districts, collaborating with centres of excellence in marble, textiles, furniture, jewellery, and leather. These hubs serve as collaborative laboratories where students experiment, prototype, and work with sustainable materials while learning to value local resources.
Through workshops, field trips, and studio visits, students gain the ability to read social and cultural contexts, transform them into meaningful projects, and communicate their work through strong visual storytelling. The course prepares professionals with a distinctive identity, ready for careers in interior, furniture, sustainable industrial, collectible, and consultancy design.
This course is aligned to IED’s narrative of DesignXCommons, an ecological design approach that promotes the care of common goods and the regeneration of the planet. Also, graduates can pursue PhD programmes at the end of their studies in an Italian or international university.
