Chris Garrett x Gage Roads Brew Co. on Beerboard

Developed by surfboard shaper Chris Garrett, aka Phantom Surfboards, in collaboration with Gage Roads Brew Co., The Beerboard is an experimental surfboard designed to function both as a rideable board and as a beer-dispensing vessel. The custom single-fin surfboard incorporates a sealed internal chamber capable of holding 10 liters of Gage Roads Summer Ale ‘Single Fin,’ exploring the relationship between surfboard construction and product design.

The project responds to the long-standing discussion within the surfing community surrounding surfboard volume, commonly measured in liters, by applying that measurement literally to the board’s internal capacity. Designed as a fully functional surfboard, the prototype combines conventional shaping techniques with an integrated liquid storage and dispensing system.

A Surfboard Designed to Ride Waves and Serve Beer

Following completion, the board was tested in the water by Olympic surfing medalist and Gage Roads part owner Jack Robinson alongside professional free surfer Brendan ‘Margo’ Margieson. The trials evaluated the board’s performance while carrying its full liquid capacity.

Integrating a 10-liter pressurized chamber into a surfboard presented several technical challenges throughout the development process. In addition to sealing the internal cavity to prevent leaks, the design required a pressurization system capable of dispensing beer while maintaining the structural integrity and surfability of the board. The combination of fluid storage, pressure management, and surfboard performance demanded multiple iterations during fabrication before arriving at the final prototype.
