half bug, half camper, this 1969 volkswagen super bugger camper is up for sale

back in the 1970s, smith’s garage — a california-based company — took the emblematic volkswagen beetle and converted it into a camper. fifty years later, one example of this creative RV has been auctioned by mecum. dubbed the volkswagen super bugger, this yellow half-camper, half-bug has been built on a 1969 volkswagen beetle and features a 1973 super beetle engine.

this particular custom build 1969 volkswagen super bugger camper had the same owner and original builder for 52 years. many of its parts are original, including the interior which highlights its period with an AM/FM CB radio. the vehicle has been equipped with new continental tires with wider rear tires for stability. the suspension has been modified to accommodate the camper which sleeps two adventurous individuals. an outside stove and propane set-up ensures your camping needs are all covered.

‘there had to be a way to find something which would accommodate two people and be extremely economical and reliable to operate,’ said lloyd g. smith, owner of smith’s garage back in 1981. ‘I still think there’s a market for something like this. in the very near future the camping industry is going to take a chevette or an omni and build a really miniaturized camper capable of carrying two to three.’
