designboom is an online media partner of the 5vie art + design quarter — a cultural marketing project that is aimed at valorizing the roman and milanese roots of milan’s old historic centre. implemented through a strategic plan as part of urban and local policies, it encompasses the streets of via santa marta, via santa maria podone, via santa maria fulcorina, via bocchetto and via del bollo. positioned between the metro stations of sant’ambrogio, duomo and cordusio, the idea of the district is to respect and address the needs of the many creative protagonists that animate the area. its purpose is to stimulate the community on a social, commercial and touristic level, acknowledging the identity of ‘milan’s nature’, while looking to the future. this is all done with 5vie’s basic aim in mind which is to develop history, culture and innovation. the 5vie art + design quarter was founded by the cultural association networking milano and is composed of andrea clementi, alessia del corona borgia, aline radice fossati calvi parisetti, ernesta del cogliano and emanuele tessarolo.

exclusively for milan design week guided tours of the archives of luigi caccia dominioni will be lead
having made its debut at milan design week 2014, 5vie returns again. its 2015 program is dedicated to architect luigi caccia dominioni, in which the milanese practice opens its doors by appointment, offering organized guided visits of his studio. the idea of the 5vie district’s overall events this year is to stimulate the local community through dynamic exhibitions and activities, engaging the participation of creative professionals and organizing opportunities in which to build a strong network amongst members of the district — from its past to the future. during milan design week 2015, the 5vie art + design quarter will boast a remarkable line-up of events, scattered throughout the district’s various locations — from spazio sanremo to the newly revamped residenze litta, from piazza affari to the giardino del terraggio.

‘the general’ study table with an extendable writing top, and small details reminiscent of a desk
among this year 5vie’s exhibitors is new indian brand scarlet splendour who makes its debut with a furniture collection by italian designer matteo cibic. presented at spazio rossana orlandi, cibic’s ‘vanilla noir’ — comprised of storage pieces, tables, mirrors; and ‘luce naga’ lighting works, have been born out of the company’s south asian origins and handicraft practices, particularly that of bone and horn inlay, offering a contemporary fusion of modern polymers and pigments that are classic, yet fun.

‘christmas cabinet’ collection by magenta workshop
a treasure within the 5vie art + design district is the residenze litta — a cluster of houses positioned within the historic and prestigious palazzo litta — that has been recently renewed by italian architect michele de lucchi. for milan design week 2015, five apartments within the estate open up and become major exhibition spaces for designers and their projects. these include the duo of milan’s servomuto, and israel’s magenta workshop, who is exhibiting their work in italy for the first time. the jerusalem-based collective’s ‘christmas cabinets’ (see designboom’s coverage of the project here) offer a storage solution whose volumes and lines create visual juxtapositions of colors, patterns and shapes. the units are comprised of quadrilateral boxes, supported by iron rod frames which are enhanced by a range of vintage wallpaper graphics that have been uniquely developed and printed directly onto the plywood structures. additionally, visitors will view the new editions of the parisian great design gallery, as well as casalinghe di tokyo‘s homage to bruno munari.

residenze litta will also be graced by the fabrics of frenchman pierre-louis mascia; the ‘ivory collections’ by new italian brand, linked to interior architect gian paolo venier; as well as artisan hand-painted papers by fabscarte, and the first editions of the newly formed carrara design factory that will present an extension of its ‘introverso’ family by paolo ulian, and moreno ratti, together with pieces by lorenzo damiani, tsukasa goto, marco guazzini, victoria wilmotte, pietrillo and vieru.
plasticWOOD, a collection by luca nichetto for berto salotti, the outdoor furnishings of d’arrigo, and a photography exhibition of sigma tau will also be on show.

‘timeless’ by CTRLZAK art & design studio secondome
residenze litta will also see the presence of design gallery secondome from rome, who is showcasing ‘timeless’ — a contemporary interpretation of an hourglass by CTRLZAK. among the first instruments that man perceived to measure time, the milan-based collective’s apparent hourglass utilizes the properties of traditional materials in reviewing this almost obsolete object. a mouth-blown borosilicate glass vessel provides transparency, while refined iron fillings trickle from one compartment to another. the design reveals the passage of time not only through movement, but through the creation of a small crystalline structure — revealing that time is not only obvious to the observer as a continuous motion, but through materials which can help visualize and make its passing something physical. secondome is also showcasing pieces produced with padiglione italia, and the final pieces of the ‘from-to’ collection organized by martino gamper for valore artigiano.

the contribution of CTRLZAK to the bustling area also sees them proposing a reflection on the world of bees, and the need for them to be protected for man and the environment in which we live within the giardino del terraggio.
