the A’ design award is the world’s largest competition of its kind, acknowledging the best product and architectural innovations — from concept phase to realization — that are launched each year. the initiative aims at bringing forth a fair, ethical and competitive platform for designers and companies alike, from a range of different creative disciplines and experience levels, to complete on a fair playing field. the A’ design award is not just an award, it is also an indicator of quality, and gets the attention of related professionals and interest groups; attracting the eyes of design oriented audiences from across the globe. nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 A’ design award until february 28, 2015. find out more on how to submit your work here.

the mission of the A’ design award and competition’s is to highlight, promote and advocate good design across 100 different categories, offering creatives from all areas of design and architecture to submit their works into the most relevant areas for review. among the most popular sectors (those which see the highest number of submissions) are architecture, building and structure design; furniture, decorative items and homeware design; interior space and exhibition design; jewelry, eyewear and watch design; and packaging design.

‘A design award winners are honored with the coveted, comprehensive and grand A’ design prize that brings the attention of press, interactive media, design critics, distributors and buyers alike. those who are recognized with this title will receive many benefits. the A’ design prize offers winners a plethora of valuable feedback in the form of fame, prestige, recognition, credibility and international awareness. privileges will see winners receiving an extensive PR campaign which sees their work being communicated to various magazines and media; their press material being translated into 20+ languages for a higher global distribution; a competition score sheet which explains why their work was selected, featuring input from the jury; inclusion in the world design rankings in addition to having their winning project in a travelling international exhibition that will stop off in italy, holland and ireland. to top it all off they will be invited to a gala night and award ceremony which will take place in lake como, where they will be acknowledged and have the opportunity to network with various design professionals and companies about their work.

a residential house for a private client by MK27 in são paulo, the home has been built as a perfect cubic volume. constructed from raw materials such as concrete and perforated metal sheets, the built-in furniture has been custom-made so that their shapes collaborate with the purity of the structure’s bold lines.

‘school of technology – higher education institution’ by nuno montenegro
platinum A’ design award winner in architecture, building and structure design category, 2013 – 2014

nuno montenegro’s design for the ‘school of technology – higher education institution’ is characterized by a massive portico which floats over the school’s gardens, creating a corporate iconic image, that includes a set of amphitheatres.

the ‘star retail & cultural center’ by andrew bromberg of Aedas
golden A’ design award winner in architecture, building and structure design category, 2013 – 2014

the ‘star retail & cultural center’ by andrew bromberg of Aedas is defined by a façade of faceted glass fissures that dissolves the bulk of the building’s volume, creating a dynamic composition of positive and negative spaces, while at the same time expressing visual balance.

the ‘grapevine house wine testing facility’ by peter stasek is envisioned as an extension of a digitally fabricated grapevine root which stands as a single supporting column of the building. based on a high utilization of air space, the structure emerges as a unifying element between the pending building in the air, and the surrounding landscape.

‘shoe class’ sneaker store by pinkeye
platinum A’ design award winner in interior space and exhibition design category, 2012 – 2013

pinkeye’s ‘shoe class’ retail concept takes its design influences from old schools, with classroom furniture acting as display platforms, and climbing frames from gymnasiums lining the walls to create additional shelving systems to present products.

‘church conversion ID residential house’ by gianna camilotti
golden A’ design award winner in interior space and exhibition design category, 2014 – 2015

‘church conversion ID residential house’ by gianna camilotti sees the creative converting a 1890’s church into a home and office for herself. the open white space which still retains much of the structure’s original architectural details, including stained glass windows and lofty ceilings, accommodates a working station/dining room, a grand piano, small and large living areas and a kitchen.

the ‘stratum folding chair’ by ammar kalo was born out of the desire to create a piece of furniture that expresses its function and material in an organic way, while taking advantage of CNC milling and fabrication technologies. the swiveling action of the wooden chair reduces its volume by half, making it easy to ship.

the ‘doubleface chest of drawers’ by ana jimenez palomar was intended as a piece of furniture that would reflect iconic mexican masks. the upside-down drawer becomes an unexpected point of interaction, as the user does not know what will happen when he / she opens it — yet the feature is perfectly functional, revealing a flap door that opens into a space for keeping books for magazines.

‘insal’arte’ food packing (fresh salad) by mirco luzzi

the concept behind mirco luzzi’s food packaging for ‘insal’arte’ was to create a graphic language that included the fresh vegetables which it was promoting with a renewed typography. the strength of the design is that it not only shows the product which is inside, but every package exhibits the initial letter of the product that it holds.

‘slider folding bicycle’ by paul hao ting hsu
platinum A’ design award winner in vehicle, mobility and transportation design category, 2012 – 2013

‘sliding folding bicycle’ by paul hao ting hsu has been developed for women in mind. it utilizes a better structure and change handle place than those already on the market, and can be folded down to suitcase size.
