influenced by the 3D-printed face shield initiatives that have been shared around the globe since the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), adam miklosi has created a simple face shield alternative consisting of only one element. the key inspiration was to create a low-cost face shield from a single sheet of plastic which could be a temporary solution to fill the gap of the slow and overloaded supply chain.

considering the lack of personal protection equipment during the pandemic, adam miklosi went over the typical process of 3D-printing a face shield strap. the procedure includes assembling the parts, adding the PET shield onto the strap, binding it with a rubber, and finally cleaning it. after realizing the lengthy duration and high cost, the designer came up with the idea of creating a cheap alternative, that is easily manufacturable in large numbers, can be shipped stacked in layers and which doctors can assemble in 10 seconds on site.

various materials and thicknesses were tested before the safest and most suitable option was picked: the 0.5 mm thick PET (APET or PETG) sheet. the face shield has been tested by two different hospitals during two shifts, where it was validated by an all positive feedback. the design has been uploaded online and is free to be used by anyone around the world for die cutting or laser cutting. the designer is currently working with fellow partners, hoping to produce this idea wordwide. using the current design, it is possible to manufacture between 30000 – 100000 pieces in an average printing studio with a die cutter.
