for its latest office in sydney, australia, airbnb commissioned local boutique design firm the bold collective to create a vibrant and comfortable workplace. as with previous collaborations with designers and architects, airbnb sought an office environment that captured the company’s values of creativity and travel. the brief asked that the new workplace allowed airbnb’s existing culture to thrive and develop, with plenty of social areas for collaboration. the overall tone of the project is informal and inviting, forming an engaging and stimulating atmosphere for work.

responding to staff’s wishes, the scheme includes an area to kick a ball — a prominent feature found within the reception area. elevator doors open up onto a stretch of suitably marked astroturf offering a quirky take on an AFL oval with subtly branded goal post protection pads. the local airbnb team selected themed rooms based on real airbnb listings, including a kangaroo valley lounge, a havana dining room, and a swedish sitting room. ‘very rarely does such a great design brief come along, and when we were asked to theme meeting rooms based on airbnb listings, we jumped up and down with joy!’ said the design team. ‘once the respective hosts had provided permission we identified the key materials and elements that would help recreate these rooms and bring them to life.’
