marcelo alegre of alegre industrial studio in valencia has worked closely with local manufacturer ACTIU over the years, researching and developing a line of office furniture that is ergonomically suitable for the workplace. the spanish designer first produced the ‘STAY’ office chair in collaboration with the alicante-based company (see designboom’s coverage of the STAY office chair here), and has now developed the TNK seating line composed of four different styles: TNK 10, TNK 20, TNK 40, and the TNK 30 which we received to furnish our designboom headquarters in milan.

TNK chairs work on an operative program which focuses on adjusting themselves according to the weight of the sitter. the back frames are made of polyamide fibre glass covered in a breathable, elastic, technical mesh (composed of 64% polyester and 36% polyamide) that absorbs pressure, vertically supporting the user while easily adapting positions to accommodate their movements. the depth of the pan itself is 50 mm and is a black or dark polypropylene shell outfitted with a cushioned cover that is made from injected viscoelastic foam and upholstered in fabric. a horizontal slide movement is integrated providing the sitter with the opportunity to  modify the proximity of the seat to the back rest according to their anthropometric characteristics. offering five different positions, a self-return system automatically moves the seat towards its front position without any weight pressure applied to the chair. each TNK chair sits on a moulded aluminium 5-star swivel base with anti-slide castors.

what is unique about the TNK family is that they function on synchro anti-tilt mechanisms which are patented by ACTIU. under each seat there are a series of handles which allow one to calibrate the angles of their chair according to their desired positioning. the seat height is adjusted using a gas lift which is located on the right hand side of the chair (when sitting) which is activated by pressing the handle in an upwards motion.
in context

TNK chairs are produced with the environment in mind. the TNK30 is made from 100% recyclable aluminium and steel, while all packaging is made from recycled carton. in its entirety, the TNK30 chair is 93.7% recyclable.
