on your next trip to amsterdam you might want to add plastic fishing to your to-do list as one dutch company is now offering tourists, and locals alike, the chance to go on a two-hour fishing adventure in the city’s canals. plastic whale, the world’s first professional plastic fishing company, was born seven years ago with a small goal of building one boat out of plastic waste; today, they have a fleet of ten, all built out of plastic they have fished out of the water.

plastic whale‘s mission sums up to making ‘the world’s waters plastic-free and create value from plastic waste.’ to achieve that, the company is organizing trips through airbnb, where participants get to see amsterdam’s historical center from the water and collect plastic from the canals using provided nets. they then use this plastic to make more fishing boats, while they have recently launched a series of circular office furniture in collaboration with vepa. the collection includes a table, chair, lamp and an acoustic panel, all made from amstedam canal plastic. part of the proceeds from the collection are to be invested in local initiatives across the world that tackle the plastic soup problem.
