designer andrea morgante of london-based shiro studio has created the ‘megaptera’ tray for italian manufacturer officina alessi. one of the first works by the designer, the tray, container, centerpiece hybrid is created by pushing a single sheet of mirror polished steel though a pressing technique specifically developed by alessi for this product. the rippling of the sheet increases the surface area and volume of the platter, similar to the way in which megaptera whales do when feeding, thus its name. the grooves also create friction as well as increase the structural rigidity without the need for more material.
