presented at the 2020 mexican design open, ‘rodar’ by design studio andrés & josé is a mobile tiny house that can provide immediate shelter to the homeless. merging vehicle and home into one, this ‘urban domestic object’ as the designers call it, could provide individuals with a place to reside, allowing them to access the minimum acceptable conditions of quality life, while seeking to redefine the use and appropriation of public spaces.

the geometry of the design by andrés & josé resembles the recognizable archetype of a house, featuring a pitched roof and a chimney. in addition, it also draws reference from the ambulances that abound in the streets of many latin american cities. apart from proposing a new portable tiny house solution, ‘rodar’ reflects on the future of housing and territorial occupation, and on the right of access to housing, while questioning the use of public areas in overpopulated cities.

the ‘rodar’ design is part of a larger project called ‘habitáculos’, comprised of a series of modified objects, which are activated differently depending on the context. the collection intends to give new, alternate meanings to public space, where now more than ever, two realities – social and health – converge in strange material singularities. the project establishes the city as a stage, while the public space serves as a field of experimentation for the future demands of the contemporary condition, and of a normality that already seems strange to us.
