designer turns a shopping cart into an affordable DIY wheelchair

‘cart wheelchair DIY’ is a wheelchair made from second-hand shopping carts to become a helping tool for the physically disabled, elderly and patients who are not able to afford an ordinary chair. with a desire to help as many people as possible, the designer apichai inthutsingh wants to show us how to improve a simple shopping cart and create a wheelchair to fit their lifestyle.

the designer has researched two types of the design: the ‘manually propelled wheelchair’ is for the users to move without caregivers. the ability to self-propel is a key factor for greater independence. the ‘transport wheelchair’ is pushed by a family member or a caregiver — it is lightweight and easy to transport — and this is the one inthutsingh’s design offers to build. cart wheelchair DIY is designed so that it can be made in basic workshops, modifying second-hand shopping carts and adding parts for more for a more comfortable position, such as a small basket, seat cushion, and hand brake.
