manhattan’s apparatus studio came equipped with various lighting fixtures and objects to display the company’s unique aesthetic at milan design week 2015. coming from different professional backgrounds the studio’s founders gabriel hendifar and jeremy anderson, have become known for their hand-worn, sculptural designs. included in the show are, ‘horse hair’ sconce and pendant, ‘axon’, ‘cloud’, ‘triad’, and ‘censer’, among others

the two ‘horse hair’ variants were created as an exploration of the natural material. wefts of coarse locks imply a structural, weight-bearing function. accompanying the equine features are patina’d brass and etched glass. either wall-mounted or ceiling hung options are available. ‘axon’ is composed of a large, slumped glass form that fits atop a brass hemisphere. two sizes of the object are offered, for either the table top or ground. a three-tier dimmer adjusts light to the wanted luminescence.

reminiscent of traditional 19th century frosting techniques, the glass orbs of ‘cloud’ are finished by hand to create an irregular, spontaneous texture. the lights emit a soft, diffused glow that reflects off the many adjoined orbs.

‘triad’ is a repetitious, conical and triangular shaped ceiling lamp. drawn upon from trigonometric principles, the large brass armature is available in brass or hand-cast porcelain — both are capable of emitting a delicate, ethereal glow. continuing the trend of mathematically inclined objects, is ‘censer’. as an incense burner, fragrance rises from smoke as it emerges from the hand-cast porcelain domes. when not used for burning incense, ‘censer’ can also function as a candleholder. the brass torch emits a flickering quality of light that’s a perfect compliment to the studio’s relaxed, sensuous design methodology.
