dead drops is an unusual project by designer aram bartholl that bring online peer-to-peer file sharing into the urban environment. dead drops are usb keys that have been permanently embedded into wall or other surface in the city. users can connect their laptops to the keys embedded in the wall and connect to the files stored inside. a user can either leave a file behind or take a file that is already existing. the design is anonymous and offline, bring something normally associated with the internet, into public space. anyone is invited to use the service and each key is embedded in a wall blank, except for a text file explaining the project. bartholl hopes others will follow his lead and create their own dead drops in their neighbourhood.
