artek presents chair designs by TAF studio and alvar aalto during stockholm furniture fair

during this year’s stockholm furniture fair, finnish company artek presented atelier chair and chair 611, two universal wooden seats that, though separated by decades in design history, are still so similar in spirit. atelier, created by TAF studio for the the nationalmuseum in stockholm, and the iconic alvar aalto 611 from 1929 were displayed side by side in a booth that playfully references the new webbing upholstery on the aalto classic.

artek‘s atelier chair was designed by TAF studio for the main dining hall of stockholm’s nationalmuseum, and was later also chosen for its auditorium, gathering a total of 245 chairs on site. with its slender proportions and geometric lines, the piece pays tribute to the orchestra chair by swedish architect sven markelius, itself a tribute to alvar aalto’s chair 611.

first launched in 1929 and in continuous production ever since, chair 611 combines a solid birch frame with a woven fabric seat and backrest, while it can be easily reupholstered, which means the chair can have many life cycles. at stockholm furniture fair, aalto’s first modern chair was presented in a new palette of subtle duo-tone colors developed in collaboration with dutch color and textile expert hella jongerius.
