atelier noise remodels former butcher shop into trendy boutique gym in hamburg

german design studio atelier noise was tasked with the design of athletik docks, a boutique gym housed in an unconventional space. an old butcher’s shop in schanzenviertel, at the heart of hamburg, was transformed into a personal training studio that gave a new life to the space. the open, rough areas turned out to be ideal for the place’s new use.

the architects chose to leave the bare butcher shop almost untouched, with only few parts taken down and added during the renovation process to keep an open space. the roughness of the existing concrete added to the raw material palette the owner and architect were looking for. in addition, the designers created a set of furniture pieces to fill up the space and complement the interior’s finishes.

to contrast the concrete, wooden elements out of oak were designed to divide the studio into separate areas and bring warmth into the space. the welcome area is cut through by a long z-shaped bench that includes spaces to store training equipment. the long counter leads the way to the lockers and provides enough space for two employees to work simultaneously.

after only one year, the training area was extended in order to keep up with the rising demand. the training area took over the basement, adding extra free space. gym users appreciated the open and light space amidst the bustling nighborhood, making athletik docks a popular training destination.
