AUDI's 'fifth ring' installation by MAD architects lights up milan design week

at milan design week 2018, AUDI presents a spatial installation conceived by MAD architects. the project, titled ‘fifth ring’, has been developed around two automotive highlights: the AUDI aicon design vision and the AUDI A6 sedan — cars that will make their italian debut during the international design fair. the installation, which has been designed to symbolize progress and evolution, also incorporates the AUDI A7 sportback and the latest AUDI A8.

for the fifth element of the project, MAD architects and AUDI created an illuminated ring that hovers at the center of the courtyard. ‘the illuminated ring in the square boundary of the historical courtyard stands for mankind’s strive for perfection,’ describes ma yansong, founder of MAD architects. ‘it floats above a water basin and reflects the constantly changing sky. it gives the viewer the feeling of walking in the clouds.’

‘this search for perfection is the force for innovation and the drive that makes AUDI cars so special,’ adds fabrizio longo, brand manager of AUDI italy. the installation signals AUDI’s presence for the sixth time at milan design week, which is regarded as the world’s leading design event. with offices in beijing, los angeles, and new york, MAD architects is currently working on projects all over the world, including the much-anticipated lucas museum of narrative art. follow designboom’s ongoing coverage from milan design week 2018 here.
