design to prevent burnout

once upon a time the boundaries between work and home were clear. today, it’s not so simple. ‘always on’ technology has enabled work to bleed into our personal lives while the pandemic and the rise of working from home have blurred these boundaries even further. type ‘burnout’ into your search bar and you’ll find endless articles about the syndrome that the world health organization describes as an occupational phenomenon ‘resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.’

thankfully, bristol based designer ben vessey has created a collection of witty computer wallpapers to help you reestablish your boundaries and restore your work/life balance. aptly named ‘clock off’, the wallpapers change according to the time, turning your computer into a not-so-subtle reminder that it’s time to put your feet up, grab a drink, and take a well-earned rest.

the designer hopes the project can help solve two main issues: first, preventing people from overworking, an issue that has been compounded by working from home as you miss the social cues of your colleagues. second, when you open your laptop in the evening and get distracted by a message from a colleague or client and kick back into ‘work mode’.

‘I figured a 10-foot high illuminated sign should help get the message across that it can wait until tomorrow,’  says vessey. the wallpapers are available in three different designs, which can be purchased individually or as part of a bundle. choose between the subtle ‘stop fucking working’, the ever-important ‘are you being paid right now?’, and the classic ‘it’s beer o’clock’.

the clock off wallpapers require macOS mojave, catalina, big sur, or monterey. installation couldn’t be simpler, and can be completed in less than a minute.
