since april 2017, the solar egg — a golden mirrored sauna — has invited bathing visitors in numerous stunning locations to relax. from paris to stockholm to copenhagen and minnesota, the solar egg has traveled around the world delighting users with its wooden interior and glimmering gold-plated stainless steel. now it’s time for it to go back to sweden where it has been welcomed by the historic town of rättvik, reflecting the spectacular landscape of dalarna.

erected by artistic duo mats bigert and lars bergström, the egg-shaped sauna stands at five meters high and four meters wide. a total of 69 separate pieces make up the egg’s exterior while a delicately-framed staircase reveals the entrance with an opening that appears to have cracked. inside, a heart-shaped wood-fired burner emits the heat.

‘we are delighted to be able to place riksbyggens solar egg at the far end of the långbryggan jetty as a symbol of rättvik this summer. one of the purposes of bigert & bergströms solar egg commissioned by riksbyggen is to put the town of kiruna on the map. with this, we hope to achieve the same thing with rättvik and dalarna,’ says mathias sandberg, sales- and marketing manager at riksbyggen.

the project continues bigert & bergström’s exploration with humanity’s relationship to climate, nature, energy and technology. on this occasion, the solar egg stands as a sculptural symbol that prompts thoughts of rebirth and an incubator that nurtures conversation and exchanges of ideas.
