tom dixon, faye toogood and timorous beasties are among designers invited by british designer bill amberg to debut a new digitally printed leather collection during london design festival this year. US-based alexandra champalimaud and natasha baradaran join the aforementioned designers in creating graphics that will be printed onto cow hides using amberg’s specially developed techniques.

amberg has spent three years developing the specialist digital printing technology that results in a much finer dye penetration to the skin. the hide is then finished with a durable dressing that retains the grain and handle of the material.

the leather will be used in various applications, as well as to update some of the designers own pieces. tom dixon, who has created four patterns including one that mimics the look of crumpled aluminum, will upholster one of his iconic ‘wingback’ chairs.

the wonderful alchemy of some of the world’s most prestigious designers combined with a printed leather that for the first time brilliantly illustrates the natural characteristics of the material I love, is something I’m so excited to share’, says bill. ‘the quality is something that should be seen and touched to be fully appreciated.’
