Boss Design’s The Loop revives discarded furniture

When planning a space, Boss Design knows that an interior design studio considers more than its architectural characteristics. The furniture used to populate that room is as much a part of the design as the walls surrounding it.

Yet we often encounter the dilemma of interior designs that systematically discard existing pieces to create a space better suited to current needs. Whether due to natural wear from use or changes in furniture trends or personal tastes, hundreds of recoverable pieces are discarded every year in favor of new furniture. This behavior generates a carbon footprint that is both significant and avoidable.

Boss chooses most effective way to protect environment

Today’s society expresses its interest in protecting the planet through the way it consumes.  According to Simon Kucher, more than 70% of Europeans say they want to adopt sustainable solutions, and that social awareness involves choosing environmentally responsible products. Yet the most sustainable decision when decorating is not to replace furniture in the least harmful way possible, but to keep it.

For this reason, Boss has introduced The Loop, an architectural service framework created to extend the life of furniture. Through this initiative, Boss works to prevent quality furniture from ending up in landfills through four pillars: ReNew focuses on repairing and reupholstering outdated or damaged furniture; ReUse will see the design team collaborate with owners to intelligently relocate products and restore their purpose within the overall scheme; RePurpose focuses on responsible clearance through donations to initiatives such as WastetoWonder; and ReCycle involves the controlled separation of materials so they can be used in new pieces in the future.

As a finishing touch, this initiative is not limited to Boss Design furniture. The brand has opened The Loop to a wider audience to repair, renew, redistribute, and recycle pieces from both Boss and other manufacturers.

History and technical expertise in service of the planet

This proposal comes from a brand with considerable knowledge. Boss has 40 years of experience, investigation, and aesthetic training underpinning the technical expertise needed to restore furniture to its original factory condition.

These four decades have allowed the brand not only to refine its craftsmanship, but also to research solutions that help protect the planet from the production stage. Examples include the integration of its BioPUR foam, low-VOC components and responsibly sourced materials that help protect indoor air quality while reducing the carbon footprint of large-scale projects.

At the same time, The Loop is connected to Boss’s Plan Zero, an initiative that provides architects with verifiable environmental documentation and certifications (Declare labels, Clean Air certification, lifecycle carbon reporting) needed for LEED, WELL v2, SKA, and BREEAM credits.

Sustainability from factory: how Lucy chair was created

To demonstrate that sustainability can be achieved at every stage of a piece of furniture’s life cycle, Boss has introduced Lucy, a chair designed not to be discarded.

With its modular design, the structure has been developed to adapt over time, even surviving drastic changes in spatial layout. Its removable cover system requires no tools and allows a complete aesthetic transformation of the space without altering the architecture or replacing the piece.

On a technical level, its internal construction combines the aforementioned BioPUR foam, a recyclable internal steel frame and responsibly sourced plywood, demonstrating that sustainability is a decision that begins when a piece is first conceived. Finally, a structure with minimal fixings was chosen to simplify assembly and disassembly at the end of its useful life.

Lucy embodies what Boss has called ‘circular engineering.’ If The Loop demonstrates that it is possible to extend the life of our furniture, whether made by the brand or not, thanks to four decades of expertise in quality and finishes, Lucy is proof that a piece can be conceived from the outset to combine architectural integrity, ergonomic design and timelessness, creating a responsible design at every level.
