BUZAO infiltrates marble with a highly saturated blue color in dyeing marble collection

founded in 2017, BUZAO is an emerging chinese brand that tempts to breakthrough the difference between product and artwork by immersing the uncertainty of artistic creation into product design. for this year’s fall edition of maison et objet, the studio presents its latest experimentation with marble in the dyeing marble collection.

for the dyeing marble collection, BUZAO has borrowed the open secret of the gemstone industry. that is, that in order to enhance the appearance of stones like agates and jadeites, they use chemical dyes to add value to the minerals. although rudimentary, this counterfeit coloring process turns out to be the most popular simulation technique as it enhances the organic texture of the material.

complying with their design ethos — to form results by separating and disintegrating the material characteristics and attributes, and dissimilating the expression of content BUZAO has ‘extracted “artificial” characterization and “absorption” attributes from modern industry, and through evolution, obtained the material expression of pure blue artificial color spreading organically on the natural stone surface.’

the dyeing marble collection sees the application and infiltration of a highly saturated blue color into the marble, suggesting an invasion of figurative artificial symbols into the material’s classical and natural imagery. after removing the absorbability of the marble and feeding it the dye from a single point, the movement of the marble surface presents a slow change over time. with the quantitative and mechanically repetitive delivery action and the slow, continuous and minimal injection of dye, the color spreads naturally and intersects with the texture to produce a random effect.
