for the 7th consecutive year, carpenters workshop gallery presents at design miami/basel with a selection of work around the exhibit title rock the casbah | when home is designed by artists‘. curated by jérôme sans, the selected pieces have been created by contemporary artists who have departed from their traditional territories of creative expression and which stand at the intersection of art and design — a theme that is trademark to the gallery’s overall vision since its inception. a symbiosis of the two disciplines is reached by the series of sculptural yet functional forms, each distinct in its material quality and physical property. the exhibited artists are atelier van lieshout, kendell geers, :mentalKLINIK, tim noble & sue webster, thukral & tagra and erwin wurm.

the exhibition seeks to challenge the artists by offering constraints and restrictions atypical to their usual practice. compared to the absolute freedom which they are usually granted — whether in the medium of sculpture, paint or installation — the creatives must operate within the perspective of giving a functional nature to their work. consequently, the carpenters workshop gallery asserts the flexibility and potential for overlap inherent between these two disciplines, and considers the shared principles between art and design.
