scottish luxury clothing retailer johnstons of elgin have opened a flagship store on new bond street, in london. the five story building houses two floors of retail space (ground and -1) with three additional levels (+2, +3, +4) dedicated to collection showrooms and a wholesale area. the space was designed by british firm checkland kindleysides with a concept based on a quote from the company, ‘no matter how far we journey, our place will always be in scotland.’

exterior
the design team’s work is an abstraction of elgin’s cloth manufacturing processes. various ideas inform the interior, all of which link back to the mill, as well as the company’s 218 year old heritage. the storefront provides a dramatic space where product and branding work in tandem to communicate elgin’s longstanding reputation of fine cashmere production.

johnstons of elgin managing director of retail george mcneil had the following to say about the new 140m2 store, ‘we are thrilled to be celebrating the opening of our first london location. the store brings the brand to life in a new and exciting way which checkland kindleysides has executed extremely well…we look forward to welcoming customers to new bond street.’
