christian vivanco has sent us images of his latest project, a small table lamp that combines scrap solid pine with a highly saturated sheet of thermoformed mma. entitled ‘beam’, the object looks to frame the intrinsic characteristics of the contrasting materials it uses, respecting the basic physical and inherent qualities of each one.

designer christian vivanco says, ‘this project came along accidentally after having constant contact with a series of lumberyards in town. there I got the chance to realize how beautiful wood can be against an urban background, planks and beams stacked one above the other, some of them rough and other refined.’

compact and tactile, the lamp cohesively merges the visibly heavy with the visibly light to create an object of alternating surfaces and profiles. based on a simple grid system, the design features gently rounded edges that comfortably sit within the user’s hand, emphasizing the smooth materiality, scale and mobility of the piece. intentionally disproportionate screws add an industrial and playful expression to the humble and simplistic form, composed of only four intermediaries.
