when thinking about his ‘traven’ collection of furniture for children, mexican designer christian vivanco envisioned three objects where a child could use their imagination in tandem with design. on the occasion of maison&objet 2015 in paris, vivanco has collaborated with nido muebles — a brand dedicated to the development of specialized children’s environments within the home — on the creation of ‘burro’, ‘luna pod’ and ‘butterfly catcher’.

the series not only seeks to resolve some of the everyday moments of a contemporary family — where do youngsters store their toys? where do they play? — but also recognize the importance of fun when using furniture. large volumes and simple shapes propose a variety of scenarios where children could act out a different experience with each of the designed objects.

the chosen materials that comprise the armchair, stool, toybox and the collection name pay homage a short story called ‘baskets in series’ by writer bruno traven, which refers to the relationship between craft and the industry of contemporary consumption. with this in mind vivanco has adopted wicker, certified wood, handmade wool and natural finishes, guaranteeing a product that is adaptable to any reality and can adjust in ability as needed.

‘burro’ is the the smallest design from the family, comprising a small basket that allows children to keep secrets and surprises hidden inside.

‘luna pod’ is a big and generous space, envisioned as a place for moments of peace and quiet for a child. the conical capsule provide natural comfort through the use of wool cushions.

‘butterfly catcher’ is the most representative piece from the family due to its composition, sourced by woven baskets. the pods of varying heights become a kind of container for toys and valued belongings of the child. baskets can rotate 360° to ‘see’ in any direction, facilitating the object to different types of spaces and needs.
