just a short walk from the historic marais district and a stroll from the river seine, citizenM’s third paris location is perfectly placed for travelers in search of culture, commerce, or community. the dutch hotel brand recently opened its gare de lyon venue, promising the smart and design-savvy hospitality that has distinguished the brand since its inception. 338 rooms are organized within a former office tower block, tailor-made to fit inside the existing building, while art pieces, installations and bespoke design objects abound within a contemporary and charming environment. 

 

on the occasion of maison et objet spring 2018, designboom was invited to citizenM gare de lyon to experience the new hotel.

visitors and guests entering citizenM gare de lyon on ground level find themselves within a large, double height entrance area. this reception space houses an installation by artists jetske visser and michiel martens, titled ‘reflecting holons’ — a visually arresting spectacle that provides an immersive and playful atmosphere. elevators ascend to the second level where guests can self-check-in and experience citizenM’s renowned ‘living room’ spaces, where visitors can work, rest, meet or play. the first of these areas features a cozy, oversized fireplace and bespoke carpet that has been designed to mimic the ticking clock of the nearby gare de lyon station.

a series of sub-divided living areas define the public areas of the hotel, designed a with the aesthetic of ‘chambre en suite’. signature black citizenM cabinets filled with a wunderkammer of accessories and objet d’art dot the space, while furniture from vitra is featured throughout.

in the heart of the living rooms is canteenM — a vibrant space to eat and drink. keeping citizenM’s signature aesthetic in mind, the walls have been adorned with specially commissioned artworks including a bespoke mural by french street artist mast cora and a fresco from local artist romain froquet. furthermore, an open air patio divides the bar from the meeting rooms and brings natural illumination into the space.

moving up to the top floor of the hotel, guests can discover the cloudM sky bar, where they can enjoy panoramic views of the river seine and the city of paris. envisioned to evoke a parisian apartment, the bar features a palette of light colors with deep oak wooden cabinets and soft furniture to make visitors feel at home, away from home.
