coke studio's hypnotic vinyls come to life with moving animation

coke studio and Ogilvy singapore’s video vinyls

Every time the record owner spins one of Coke Studio’s hypnotic and multi-sensorial ‘Video Vinyls,’ the illustrated animation sequence drawn on the discs comes to life, as if it were playing a cutout movie. It’s a surefire way to entertain the record owner both visually and musically. While listening to the vinyl’s tracks, the record owner can also watch the animation sequence unfold on their turntable, everything already painted and recorded for them to enjoy.

These hypnotic vinyls enter as a form of celebration for the 7th season of the TV program Coke Studio Philippines. The studio has always been a platform where musicians from different genres come together to collaborate and create original music for their fans. This time, Coke Studio Philippines partnered with Ogilvy Singapore to spearhead the project. Together, they collaborated with illustrators to animate the traditionally analog vinyls, making a spirited statement about their shared creative endeavors.

Teaming up with illustrators for the hypnotic vinyls

Ogilvy Singapore (part of WPP Open X) and Coke Studio teamed up with illustrators Vanilla Chi, Rakhmat Jaka, Mathieu Labrecque for the hypnotic Video Vinyls and their animation sequences. The artists didn’t just draw the illustrated animation; they studied the song lyrics and tracks of the vinyls they would be working on and inserted Easter eggs and clues only authentic fans of the album artists would be able to spot and appreciate. But Coke Studio’s Video Vinyls stray from being boxed into the label ‘for fans only.’ The limited-edition discs are also for art and design collectors who have keen and sharp eyes for visuals that artistically and musically speak.

Zoetrope technique for coke studio’s video vinyls

To produce the animation sequence and Video Vinyls, Coke Studio adopts the Zoetrope technique, one of the oldest styles of animation. It is a design approach not often used for vinyls, but Coke Studio takes its chance by applying it to their creative project. The Zoetrope technique asks the creator to make a series of images, slightly altered as they progress, arranged around a circle, so when the surface is rotated quickly, the images appear to blend together and create an illusion of movement. The concept is fully embodied in Coke Studio’s Video Vinyls, layered with different sequences and a vibrant use of zesty colors.

Every vinyl features one song from the 7th season of the TV program Coke Studio Philippines, where Filipino musicians come together and contribute to the creative project. Their songs become the varied layers for the Video Vinyls, each of the discs representing the different artists that contributed to the track. Unboxed by the artists themselves, these limited edition video vinyls were distributed to music publishers, radio DJs, and ardent fans of Coke Studio’s musicians.
